Thiel’s Investment Moves in AI Stocks
Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook, sold his entire stake in Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) during the third quarter of 2023. This sale is notable as Nvidia’s performance remained flat in Q4. On the other hand, Thiel increased his investments in Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), albeit with mixed results as Apple’s stock rose by 7% while Microsoft’s fell by 7% during the same period. The trades highlight Thiel’s belief that investments in AI applications may outperform hardware-focused investments over the next few years.
Thiel’s portfolio report, mandated by the SEC for managers with over $100 million in assets, shows he held only three stocks as of September 30. The pivot away from Nvidia toward Microsoft and Apple indicates a strategic shift in his investment focus within the artificial intelligence sector, positioning himself for potential growth as the AI market evolves toward software and application development.
