Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) announced Wednesday its plans to finish the expansion of Train 1 at its Abreu e Lima refinery in the first quarter of 2025. This development comes almost a decade after the project was halted during the massive “Car Wash” corruption scandal.
Furthermore, the company stated that work on the refinery’s second train is set to commence in the second half of this year, with completion expected in 2028.
The first train’s expansion will increase the refinery’s capacity by 15,000 barrels per day to 115,000 barrels per day. Upon the conclusion of the second train, the capacity will soar to 260,000 barrels per day.
At present, Abreu e Lima represents approximately 6% of Petrobras’ (PBR) total refining capacity in Brazil.
This expansion is part of the company’s broader initiative to ramp up fuel production and reduce the country’s reliance on imports, as per Petrobras (PBR) President Jean Paul Prates.
