Pinterest, Inc. (PINS) has announced a $4 billion commitment to Amazon Web Services (AWS) through 2031, with the aim of enhancing its AI capabilities, improving user experiences, and modernizing its visual-discovery infrastructure. The partnership, formalized on June 4, 2023, is a significant long-term investment focused on AI development, including search and shopping enhancements.

Pinterest processes over 80 billion searches each month, predominantly visual and commercially driven. The company reported a 25% increase in its non-GAAP cost of revenue in Q2, totaling $245 million, which reflects its expanded GPU capacity and spending on AI initiatives. Despite this rising cost base, Pinterest is looking to leverage its AI advancements for sustained revenue growth and improved profitability.

As part of its AI strategy, Pinterest aims to automate advertising through initiatives like Performance+, which has shown increased return on ad spend for participating advertisers. The company is navigating the challenges of higher operational costs while targeting enhanced monetization from its ad business and AI tools.
