Steady Rates Anticipated Amid Inflation Jitters
As Taiwan braces for its central bank’s upcoming policy interest rate decision on Thursday, March 21, economists are expecting a status quo in the face of mounting inflation concerns. Central Bank Governor Yang Chin-Long’s forewarning of escalating inflation expectations has set the stage for a cautious approach.
Economists Forecast No Change in Interest Rates
Out of the 26 economists surveyed, an overwhelming majority of 25 anticipate that the central bank will maintain the benchmark discount rate at 1.875%. Looking further ahead, predictions suggest that rate cuts may only come into play in the second quarter of 2025, with a median estimate pegging the revised rate at 1.75%.
Inflation Woes on the Horizon
Taiwan’s consumer price index surged to a concerning 3.08% in February, reaching a 19-month high largely due to rising food prices during the Lunar New Year festivities. The looming prospect of electricity price hikes in April is expected to sustain this inflationary pressure, keeping the central bank on its toes.
Steering Through Economic Headwinds
Having paused rate hikes since June, the central bank has resorted to a series of five incremental rate increases since March 2022, totaling 75 basis points to combat inflationary forces. As the bank prepares to reveal its revised economic growth and inflation projections this week, analysts and investors await these crucial indicators to better anticipate the financial landscape ahead.
Challenges and Prospects for Taiwan’s Economy
With Taiwan’s economic growth momentum facing headwinds due to soft global demand and inflationary pressures, the central bank’s cautious monetary policy stance underscores the delicate balancing act required to nurture sustained economic growth while taming inflationary impulses. An upcoming revision of economic forecasts will shed further light on the path ahead for Taiwan’s economy, a pivotal player in the global supply chain.
