Pony AI is currently in preliminary talks with Uber Technologies regarding a potential acquisition of its U.S. arm. The financial terms of this prospective deal remain undisclosed. Pony AI made its Nasdaq debut in November 2024 and currently operates a fleet of approximately 250 robotaxis, with plans to expand to over 1,000 by 2025.
The partnership between Pony AI and Uber aims to launch the deployment of these robotaxis on Uber’s platform in the Middle East later this year, initially featuring a safety operator onboard. If the acquisition is finalized, it would enhance Uber’s presence in the expanding autonomous vehicle market.
Year-to-date, Uber’s stock has surged by 51.8%, while Pony AI’s has seen a decline of 4.8%. Uber’s former CEO, Travis Kalanick, is reportedly involved in discussions to help finance the potential acquisition.
