Meta Platforms Agrees to $17.1 Billion Settlement Over Social Media Addiction Lawsuits

On August 26, 2023, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) reached a settlement totaling up to $17.1 billion with a coalition of U.S. states and territories regarding lawsuits over social media addiction. This settlement will be payable over a decade and includes agreements to implement stronger safeguards for young users, such as daily usage limits and stricter parental controls.

The settlement amount represents approximately one quarter’s worth of Meta’s revenue, which was reported at $60.8 billion in Q2 2023, up 28% year over year. While the settlement is significant, it is not expected to severely impact the company’s finances, with net income reported at $15.8 billion, despite a 14% decline attributed to AI investments.
