Potential Merger: SpaceX and Tesla

Bettors on prediction market Kalshi assign a 74% probability that Elon Musk’s companies, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Tesla, will merge before May 1, 2027, following Musk’s ambiguous comments during Tesla’s recent quarterly conference call. While Musk hinted at increasing collaboration, he did not confirm any merger plans.

Despite the speculation, analysts caution that a merger may present significant logistical challenges. SpaceX’s current business model is unproven and capital-intensive, with claims of a $28.5 trillion addressable market but no profitability outside of its Starlink service. In contrast, Tesla’s profitability is supported by non-sustainable income sources, raising concerns that intertwining the two businesses could impair Tesla’s financial health.

Historically, SpaceX raised $85.7 billion in a recent IPO, nearly tripling the previous record held by Saudi Aramco, intensifying focus on Musk’s dual ventures and their future consolidation.
