Progressive Planet Secures Funding for Innovative PozGlass™ Pilot Plant
KAMLOOPS, BC, March 5, 2025 /CNW/ – Progressive Planet (TSXV:PLAN) ASHXF (“Progressive Planet”, “PLAN”, or the “Company”) has announced a notable funding initiative of up to $4,636,468. This funding will support the construction of a pilot plant dedicated to producing PozGlass™, a low-carbon supplementary cementitious material (SCM) made from post-consumer glass. Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is providing this funding over a four-year timeline, with the first tranche of $1,555,682 received on January 31, 2025.
“PozGlass™ is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of cement production. This funding enables us to innovate, lower emissions, and create value from post-consumer glass, which has often been mismanaged as waste,” stated Steve Harpur, CEO of Progressive Planet. He expressed gratitude for SDTC’s support, emphasizing its importance in advancing this project.
This investment marks a significant step in Canada’s efforts to decarbonize the construction sector. Cement production is responsible for over 7% of global CO2 emissions. PozGlass™ offers a promising alternative by reducing reliance on clinker, a carbon-heavy component of conventional cement while also diverting waste glass from landfills.
“The backing of SDTC and Lafarge Canada strengthens the case for PozGlass™ as a practical solution for decarbonizing cement production,” added Steve Harpur.
On June 29, 2023, Progressive Planet established a purchase agreement with Lafarge Canada Inc. to procure all of the PozGlass™ produced by its pilot plant, up to 3,500 metric tonnes annually.
Under this agreement, Lafarge Canada will provide technical guidance to Progressive Planet, assisting in the development of the PozGlass™ technology through the pilot plant’s design, construction, and operations.
“We appreciate Lafarge Canada’s ongoing assistance as we seek non-dilutive funding for part of the PozGlass™ pilot plant’s construction,” stated Harpur.
“With the decline of traditional supplementary cementitious materials, innovation is essential. Companies like Progressive Planet present new alternatives to lower the carbon footprint of construction materials via circular economy principles. We are thankful for the Government of Canada for their support of emerging technologies and look forward to collaborating with Progressive Planet on PozGlass™ testing and implementation,” said Brad Kohl, President & CEO of Lafarge Canada (West).
A Scalable, Canadian Innovation
The Kamloops facility will act as an innovation and production hub, utilizing Canada’s plentiful supply of post-consumer glass to scale PozGlass™ for international markets. In contrast to traditional SCMs like fly ash, which are declining in availability as provinces reduce coal-fired power (1,2), PozGlass™ is created from post-consumer glass, predominantly sourced from urban areas that consume significant amounts of Portland cement. Its proximity to key materials and users ensures that PozGlass™ integrates easily into current cement production methods, providing a sustainable and scalable solution.
This initiative aligns with Canada’s objectives to promote clean technology and circular economy concepts. By transforming waste into a valuable resource, the PozGlass™ pilot plant aims to position Canada as a global leader in low-carbon cement solutions, generating jobs and encouraging economic growth.
Building Momentum Toward a Low-Carbon Future
The global market for low-carbon cement, valued at US$2 billion in 2023, is expected to grow threefold by 2034. With a network of partnerships among investors, engineers, and construction professionals, Progressive Planet is well-positioned to leverage this growth while advancing efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of one of the world’s most critical industries.
Anticipated to commence operations in October 2025, the pilot plant represents a crucial step toward increasing PozGlass™ production and facilitating its acceptance across North America and beyond. The pilot plant’s initial operations will focus on dry processing post-consumer glass to eliminate contaminants, resulting in a coarse glass powder that serves as the sole ingredient.
Progressive Planet to Launch New Sustainable Glass Products
Progressive Planet Solutions Inc. is initiating production on PozGlass™, a new sustainable building material. The project will unfold in two phases. Phase 1 will involve the creation of various coarse glass products, including CanBlast™. Previously, CanBlast™ was produced by a third-party using post-consumer glass, but Progressive Planet is taking this in-house.
In Phase 2, the company plans to wet grind the coarse glass to produce PozGlass™. Construction of the new wet grinding facility is projected to be completed by late 2026.
