Bridging the divide between high-end capabilities and budget-friendly pricing, Qualcomm Inc. QCOM has taken a bold step by introducing its latest innovation, the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset. This cutting-edge chipset promises to bring the premium features of the current flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to a more accessible price range.

Under the Hood: The Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset is strategically positioned just underneath its flagship counterpart in terms of features and cost.

Equipped with a GPU comparable to the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, albeit with subtle differences in performance core count and frequency, this new chipset is poised to make a significant impact in the market.

Furthermore, it boasts a previous-generation modem, the X70 5G, which includes Wi-Fi 7 support. The chipset also supports on-device generative AI models and is capable of running large language models with up to 10 billion parameters.

Exploring the Horizon

According to Qualcomm’s Deepu John, senior director of product management, the Snapdragon chip tiers can be divided into three sub-categories. The “S” series, represented by the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3, resides just below the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, hinting at a possible 8 Plus Gen 3 variant in the future.

Despite the new release, phone manufacturers are still leaning on the 2022 flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, for non-flagship devices.

Another offering, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, positioned below the 8S Gen 3, has only made cameo appearances in select devices. Qualcomm’s strategic move underscores its commitment to maintaining a strong foothold in the high-end phone sector.
