Tesla to Launch Robotaxis by 2026
Tesla plans to commence mass production of its Cybercab robotaxis in 2026, anticipating regulatory approvals. CEO Elon Musk asserts that the shift to autonomous electric vehicles (EVs) will significantly change consumer perceptions regarding mobility costs, with estimated operating costs for the Cybercab around $0.30 per mile, compared to over $2 for traditional internal combustion engine taxis.
Despite a slow rollout, Tesla remains well-positioned to adapt, given its profitable EV business and capacity to produce lower-cost models, unlike competitors Ford and General Motors, which have scaled back their EV strategies. This flexibility may afford Tesla a competitive edge, regardless of how quickly the robotaxi market develops.
