In a bold move, Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, is now aiming for the growing U.S.-Japan chip sector through his venture capital firm Seven Seven Six.

Ohanian is shifting his focus towards tech investments in Japan, with a clear objective of reinforcing the U.S.-Japan chip alliance, as reported by Nikkei Asia on Thursday.

Seven Seven Six, Ohanian’s venture capital firm with $970 million in assets, is actively seeking early-stage startups, particularly those specializing in AI processors. Despite global trends moving away from globalization, Ohanian anticipates a flourishing U.S.-Japan partnership in the next decade.

“It just makes sense for us to build connections and relationships with Japan because this is a gateway to Asia. Undoubtedly, Japan stands as one of America’s closest allies and partners,” he shared.

During an event hosted by Japanese fund X&KSK, Ohanian emphasized Japan’s crucial role as Asia’s entry point and a key ally to the U.S. This aligns with the U.S. strategy to prompt allies to reduce semiconductor supply chain reliance on China.

Ohanian, who has had multiple roles at Reddit, also mentioned the company’s recent IPO, which witnessed a soaring debut of its shares. He noted Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, holds a significant stake in Reddit, hinting at Altman’s potential leverage of Reddit’s data for refining AI tools like ChatGPT.

The growing prevalence of Taiwanese chip firms in Japan underlines the strategic importance of the U.S.-Japan chip alliance. Companies like Alchip Techs and Taiwan Semiconductor are relocating operations to Japan in response to U.S. efforts to curb China’s semiconductor progress.

Further underscoring this trend, TSMC is considering expanding its advanced chip packaging facilities in Japan, a move that could significantly impact the global semiconductor landscape.

In June, Japan unveiled an ambitious goal to triple its domestic semiconductor sales by 2030.
