Rising Thailand Sugar Exports Drive Price Increases

July NY world sugar #11 (SBN26) closed at $14.76, down $0.20 (-1.34%) on Friday, while August London ICE white sugar #5 (SWQ26) closed at $443.40, down $2.60 (-0.58%). This decline followed the release of the International Sugar Organization (ISO) forecasting a record global sugar production of 182 million metric tons (MMT) for the 2025/26 season, a 3.5% increase year-over-year.

Thai sugar exports surged by 29% year-over-year to 1.6 MMT for January-April 2026, pressuring prices alongside concerns over possible disruptions from an El Niño weather pattern. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an 82% likelihood of El Niño conditions impacting rainfall in major producing regions like Brazil and India this year. India’s ongoing export ban until September 30 and reduced sugar production projections further support sugar prices amid tightening global supply forecasts.
