RTX Corp. has hit the jackpot with a lucrative deal that involves upgrading Tomahawk missiles. The contract, awarded by the Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, MD, is poised to bring in a windfall for the company.

Breaking Down the Contract

Valued at an impressive $287 million, the agreement is scheduled to reach completion by March 2026. The current modification opens the door for RTX to provide recertification and modernization services for a total of 166 Tomahawk Block IV All-Up-Round Missiles. This overhaul aims to extend the operational life of these missiles by an additional 15 years.

Furthermore, the scope of the upgrade includes addressing missile obsolescence, health monitoring, software maintenance, depot support, and the procurement of associated hardware. Notably, a significant chunk of this project will be carried out in Tucson, AZ.

The Crucial Role of the Tomahawk Cruise Missile

Raytheon’s Tomahawk subsonic cruise missile plays a critical role in deep land attack warfare strategies. Engineered to navigate at ultra-low altitudes with high subsonic speeds, this weapon is steered along a stealthy route by sophisticated guidance systems tailored to each mission. Notably, the Naval Strike Missile is capable of engaging and neutralizing vessels up to 100 nautical miles away. An enhanced capability of the Tomahawk is its proficiency in network-centric warfare, leveraging data from a multitude of sensors across various platforms to pinpoint its intended target.

The Tomahawk missile’s robust demand in the market is evidenced by the U.S. and allied forces having tested the GPS-equipped Tomahawk over 550 times in flight and utilized it in more than 2,300 combat scenarios.

Potential for Growth Amidst Rising Tensions

In a landscape where geopolitical tensions are escalating globally, nations are ramping up their defense capabilities significantly. As technological advancements in missile defense systems continue to progress, missile defense has emerged as a cornerstone of a nation’s security strategy.

Given the United States’ position as the top weapons supplier on a global scale and RTX’s prominent standing as a missile manufacturer, the uptick in missile defense adoption by nations stands to offer substantial growth prospects for the company. The recent contract triumph is a testament to this trend.

Incidents such as the Russian incursion into Ukraine and the persistent strife in the Middle East have further fueled the demand for missiles in the market. Research from Mordor Intelligence forecasts a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.82% in the global missile and missile defense systems market between 2024 and 2029. This projection bodes well for RTX, equipped with a range of battle-tested missiles in its product lineup, including the TOW missile, Guidance Enhanced Missile, the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, Patriot, Standard Missile 2, and of course, the Tomahawk missile.
