It’s essential to understand how ETFs function. Although they trade like stocks, investors buy and sell “units” instead of shares. These units are highly adaptable; they can be created or destroyed based on investor demand. Each week, we analyze the week-over-week changes in outstanding units to identify ETFs that experience significant inflows—indicating new units created—or outflows, where older units are removed. Creating new units necessitates the purchase of the underlying assets of the ETF, while or removing units requires selling those assets, making substantial flows influential on the individual components held within ETFs.
