Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) function similarly to stocks. However, investors buy and sell ”units” rather than shares. These units can be traded like stocks and can also be created or redeemed based on investor demand. We track week-over-week changes in shares outstanding to identify ETFs with significant inflows (indicating many new units created) or outflows (reflecting many old units destroyed). The creation of new units necessitates the purchase of underlying holdings, while unit destruction involves selling these holdings, which can influence the performance of the ETF’s individual components.
