Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) function similarly to stocks, but instead of “shares,” investors are trading “units.” These units can be bought and sold like stocks, yet they can also be created or destroyed based on investor demand. Each week, we monitor the weekly changes in shares outstanding to identify ETFs with significant inflows, indicating new units created, or outflows, suggesting old units destroyed. The creation of units entails purchasing the underlying holdings, while the destruction of units requires selling them. Thus, large flows can influence the individual components held within ETFs.
