South Korea’s AI Initiative: Key Developments

South Korea plans to invest $71.5 billion in artificial intelligence by 2030 as part of its strategy to become a global AI leader. The nation boasts the highest density of industrial robots and strong semiconductor companies, exemplified by Samsung and SK Hynix.

SK Telecom (SKM), the largest telecommunications company in South Korea with a ~50% market share and 23 million clients, is pivoting towards AI. The firm has established three main AI verticals: AI data center infrastructure, in-house AI optimization, and Agentic AI solutions like its personal assistant, A-Dot. In 2023, SKM invested $100 million in AI start-up Anthropic, which has since surged in valuation from ~$5 billion to ~$380 billion, potentially increasing SKM’s stake to ~$2 billion.

SK Telecom earns a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) with projected year-on-year earnings growth of 283.10% by 2026. The company’s shares have outperformed the market, with a year-to-date increase of 40.6%, compared to the S&P 500’s decline of 5.1%.
