The EPA recently issued new range estimates for three Tesla models and four trim levels, slightly lowering all four range estimates from the prior figures.

Interestingly, the range estimate for the Model S Plaid was adjusted to 359 miles when equipped with the smaller 19-inch wheels, down from the previous 396 miles. Strikingly, the Plaid’s range estimate on the larger wheels remained unchanged. The Model Y Long Range now has a 310-mile range estimate versus the prior estimate of 330 miles. Furthermore, the Model Y Performance’s range estimate dropped to 285 miles from 303 miles, and the Model X Plaid’s range was cut to 326 miles from 333 miles, as documented by the EPA.

Last year, the Department of Justice initiated an investigation into Tesla’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) range claims, potentially influencing the revised figures from the EPA due to new testing guidelines. In addition, a report from Reuters alleged that Tesla (TSLA) established a special “Diversion Team” to assure customers that there were no issues with the range of their vehicles.

Notably, Tesla (TSLA) is not the sole electric vehicle maker to field complaints regarding range. The 520-mile range for the Lucid Group’s (LCID) Lucid Air Dream Edition, 350-mile range for the Mercedes-Benz (OTCPK:MBGAF) EQS, and 329-mile range for the General Motors’ (GM) GMC Hummer EV1 have also been contested by owners. Consumer Reports’ recent investigation revealed that advertised electric vehicle driving ranges varied widely, partly due to highway and city driving not being disaggregated. The report found that the Ford (F) F-150 Lightning pickup truck delivered the poorest performance compared to the stated EPA estimate. On a more positive note, Rivian Automotive’s R1T and Ford’s (F) Mustang Mach-E exceeded EPA estimates at highway speeds. “The variables for determining EV range are similar to variables for calculating gasoline car range, though ambient temperature and average speed have a larger impact on electric vehicles,” explained iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer. This leaves potential electric vehicle buyers with the task of conducting thorough research to ascertain the real-world reputation of EV models.
