Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) experienced a seismic upheaval as flight attendants overwhelmingly voted in favor of strike authorization.
Represented by Transport Workers Union Local 556, the flight attendants expressed their willingness to initiate a strike if negotiations fail to yield a favorable agreement. The union could trigger a 30-day cooling-off period, paving the way for 21,000 Southwest Airlines (LUV) flight attendants to orchestrate a potential strike if prerequisites remain unmet.
Operating without a contract for the past five years, following the expiration of the previous agreement in October 2018, flight attendants emphatically rebuffed Southwest’s (LUV) contract proposition. The proposal entailed an immediate 20% pay raise, with an additional 36% increment spread over the subsequent five years – an offer the union resolutely dismissed.
The demands articulated by the union embrace multifarious facets, encompassing remuneration for hours worked, adequate intervals between shifts, autonomy in scheduling, access to sustenance, and safe respite during travel, among other requisites.
“After enduring protracted negotiations, characterized by wage reductions and involuntary time off, Southwest Airlines’ flight attendants have unequivocally conveyed their dissent regarding this suggested contract,” declared the president of the flight attendants’ union at Southwest (LUV) Airlines.
Notably, the overwhelming support for a potential strike mirrors the recent assent by Southwest (LUV) pilots to a novel contract. The pilots’ endorsement culminated in a 29.15% escalation in pay during the inaugural year, coupled with 4% annual increments extending until 2027.
“When negotiations at the table purportedly exclude certain labor stipulations, yet are conceded to other employee cadres, it glaringly illustrates unequal valuation of the personnel,” lamented the union’s president.
In the event of an impasse, the union has slated a “Worldwide Day of Action” for Feb. 13, representing a concerted display of dissent. The turbulence reverberating through labor negotiations at Southwest Airlines appears far from abating.
