SpaceX Announces Orbital AI Data Centers with Nvidia Partnership
SpaceX, led by CEO Elon Musk, has unveiled a plan to launch an orbital network of AI data centers named “Starmind,” collaborating with Nvidia. The announcement was made via SpaceX’s social media platform X during earnings news on October 3, 2023. The first satellite in this network, equipped with Nvidia’s Vera CPUs and Rubin GPUs, is expected to begin launching as early as next year.
SpaceX aims to create a “megaconstellation” of up to 1 million Starmind satellites, significantly surpassing the 42,000 satellites in its current Starlink fleet. Musk estimates that the design will drastically reduce compute costs by maximizing solar energy efficiency and minimizing cooling requirements typically found in terrestrial data centers.
