**SpaceX’s Energy Infrastructure Plans Under Elon Musk’s Leadership**
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced during the company’s earnings call on August 11 that the firm has invested $15.8 billion over the past three months to scale its artificial intelligence compute infrastructure, which is highly energy-intensive. Musk highlighted the need to enhance energy supply, setting a tentative target of 20 gigawatts of power and cooling capacity online by the end of 2024, although he expects around 15 gigawatts to be realistic. For comparison, New York City requires approximately 10 gigawatts during heatwaves, underscoring the scale of SpaceX’s energy requirements.
Currently, SpaceX is utilizing a mix of renewable and conventional energy sources, with a significant reliance on natural gas. However, with the anticipated demand for electricity from AI data centers expected to rise by 2030, Musk emphasized the necessity for reliable, low-carbon energy solutions. The transition to nuclear energy, particularly through small modular reactors, is seen as a potential solution, with over 80 SMR facilities under development globally. Notable investment opportunities in this sector include Oklo Inc. and NuScale Power, both focused on creating viable nuclear energy solutions.
