In a bold move, automaker Stellantis STLA has finally inked an emissions pact with California, a significant leap forward from its earlier rebuffed attempts in 2019 to partake in a similar arrangement.
Championing Change: Stellantis has made a resolute commitment to uphold California’s zero-emissions mandate for light-duty vehicle sales until 2030, as reported by Reuters recently. This steadfast promise remains firm even if the state lacks the authority to enforce these regulations. What sets Stellantis apart is its decision not to contest California’s powers under the Clean Air Act pertaining to greenhouse gas emissions and zero-emission vehicle standards.
Previously, auto behemoths like Ford, Honda, Volkswagen, and BMW willingly embraced akin emissions reductions with California in 2019, with Swedish luxury automaker Volvo Cars, under China’s Geely, swiftly falling in line thereafter.
Also of Note: The pathway for Tesla’s ingress into India clears, Fisker’s rocky road to potential bankruptcy, and Rivian garners Wall Street’s affection.
Last December, Stellantis challenged California’s rejection to include them in the agreement, citing the need to curtail operations at two SUV plants in Michigan and Ohio due to California’s stringent emissions guidelines.
Stellantis’ CEO, Carlos Tavares, hailed the accord as a monumental opportunity, stating that it “will prevent 10 to 12 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the agreement’s tenure and will also enable our U.S. clientele to fully embrace our cutting-edge technologies.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) lauded the collaboration with Stellantis, affirming that it would “assist California in realizing our ambitious objectives of significantly reducing pollution levels and ramping up the adoption of eco-friendly cars on our roads.”
An Environmental Milestone: Stellantis’ concord with California marks a pivotal breakthrough in the state’s environmental ambitions. California’s staunch advocacy for stringent emissions standards, exemplified by its appeal to the EPA for consent to ban gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035, underscores its proactive stance. Stellantis’ alignment with other automakers in the 2019 agreement underscores the industry’s collective pivot towards sustainable technologies.
Furthermore, the state’s concerted effort with truck and engine manufacturers, including Stellantis, to achieve a zero-emission target by 2045 underscores the joint endeavor to combat air pollution and transition to electric vehicles.
