Market Outlook: S&P 500 and Tech Sector Earnings

The S&P 500 is currently 6% below its peak of 6,979, with Kalshi prediction markets showing a 60% chance it could decline another 10%, potentially falling below 5,900. The rise in oil prices, driven by the ongoing Iran conflict—now above $100 per barrel for the first time since mid-2022—has led investors to shift towards safer assets like U.S. Treasuries.

Despite recession fears, Wall Street analysts have significantly revised earnings estimates for the technology sector, increasing anticipated earnings growth for Q1 from 34% to 45%, according to FactSet. Notable upward revisions are seen in AI stocks, specifically Micron, Nvidia, Sandisk, and Palantir, with Micron and Nvidia noted as particularly strong buying opportunities.

Micron’s median target price suggests a potential upside of 50%, valuing shares at $550 relative to its current price of $366. Similarly, Nvidia’s target price of $265 reflects a 50% upside from its current share price of $177. In contrast, Sandisk and Palantir offer more modest upside potentials of 6% and 35%, respectively.
