The country’s strengths include manufacturing capabilities, particularly in robotics, and dominance in semiconductors, most notably through companies like Samsung and SK Hynix. The nation aims to harness its robust consumer electronics infrastructure to facilitate AI advancements.
SK Telecom: Dominating the South Korean AI Landscape
SK Telecom (SKM), South Korea’s largest telecommunications provider, holds a ~50% market share with 23 million clients. Unlike traditional telecom companies, SKM is pivoting towards AI, focusing on areas such as AI data center infrastructure, in-house AI optimization, and Agentic AI technologies. In 2023, SKM made a strategic $100 million investment in AI startup Anthropic, which has seen its valuation skyrocket from ~$5 billion to ~$380 billion, potentially valuing SKM’s stake at ~$2 billion.
Market Outlook for SK Telecom
SKM has received a Zacks Rank of #1 (Strong Buy), with projections indicating a 283.10% year-over-year earnings growth rate by 2026. The company’s stock has outperformed the market, gaining 40.6% year-to-date, in contrast to the S&P 500’s decline of 5.1%.
