“Analysis: Declining Prices of Lithium, Nickel, and Cobalt Signifies Challenges for EV Battery Metals Market”

Global Electric Vehicle Battery Capacity Reaches New Heights Amid Market Shifts From January to October, the world saw a total of 674.6 GWh of new battery power, according to Toronto’s Adamas Intelligence, a firm specializing in EV supply chain research. Increasing Popularity of Hybrid Vehicles The surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption coincides with a growing preference for hybrid vehicles, which typically contain smaller batteries. This trend reflects a noticeable shift in consumer choice. This year, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) have seen a staggering 71% increase in battery capacity compared to a modest 17% growth for fully electric cars. The

Video: China’s dominance drives global battery trends, says Adamas Intelligence

“They produce more than they sell inside the country. So, if you want to look at trends, you must start in China,” Els, head of Adamas Inside, told The Northern Miner’s western editor, Henry Lazenby, last month during the Energy Transition Metals Summit in Washington, D.C. Els, who’s also editor-at-large with The Northern Miner’s sister publication MINING.COM, pointed out that battery chemistry is quickly evolving.  Following a shift toward lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that began in China in 2020, over half of the EVs sold there are LFP. The chemistry, which is cheaper than others, is also lower density.

Miners struggle to finance projects amid surging battery demand — IEA

In its recent Global EV Outlook 2024, IEA highlights the necessity of external sources to support large-scale capital expenditure in mining projects, however miners Albemarle, Core Lithium, Liontown Resources and Pilbara Minerals recently announced project spending reductions, lower dividends, and job cuts. Nickel and cobalt projects in Australia have also been delayed or halted, involving companies like BHP, First Quantum Minerals and Wyloo Metals. In the US, Piedmont Lithium Inc. is letting go of 25% of staff. “Over the 2024-2026 period, we could see progressive consolidation of critical mineralextraction and refining projects and businesses around lowest-cost producers,” said the Agency.

American Battery updates assessment of Tonopah Flats lithium project, Nevada

Rather the figures comply with the U.S. S-K 1300, which the company says is “similar to a preliminary economic assessment”. The Tonopah Flats claystone is one of the largest lithium resources in the United States. The measured and indicated resource is 3.16 million tonnes averaging 596 ppm lithium and containing 11.4 million tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM). The inferred resource is 2.93 billion tonnes averaging 550 ppm lithium, containing 21.2 million tonnes LHM. American Battery believes that over the 50-year mining period, about 540,000 tonnes of claystone will be treated annually. The company plans to use its own dilute
