Quirky Origins of Looi Robot
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk recently found common ground between the oddball Looi robot and the animated sitcom Rick and Morty.
Meet Looi: An Emotional Desktop Companion
Looi, a creation from Tangible Future, is a desktop robot that forms a symbiotic relationship with a smartphone, using the phone screen as its face. Capable of a wide emotional range and powered by ChatGPT, Looi is designed to be a friendly desktop companion, offering game-playing capabilities and wireless charging functionality while gracefully avoiding desk edges.
Backers Wanted for Looi’s Crowdfunding Campaign
Tangible Future is presently seeking backers for Looi through a crowdfunding initiative on Kickstarter. Consumers worldwide can secure a Looi unit for $169 without discounts, with mass production slated to commence in July 2024, followed by product shipments to regional warehouses starting August 2024.
Musk’s Whimsical Reaction
In response to the little robot, Musk delivered a succinct “pass the butter,” a nod to Rick and Morty. This callback references the show’s butter robot, an invention of the character Rick used solely for passing butter but eventually meets an untimely demise after attempting to fulfill additional functions.
Optimus: Tesla’s Ambitious Humanoid Robot
Elon Musk revealed that Tesla is actively working on Optimus, a humanoid robot that he believes will be extraordinary. The concept was first introduced during Tesla’s fourth-quarter earnings call in January, with Musk expressing his hopeful intentions to start delivering Optimus units next year. Despite acknowledging the uncertainty of future developments, Musk remains confident in the revolutionary potential of this innovation.
