Tesla Launches Full Self-Driving in China Amid Growing Competition in Autonomous Vehicles

Tesla has launched its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in China, enhancing its foothold in the world’s largest electric vehicle market. This rollout, which follows extensive regulatory discussions, introduces advanced city-navigation features and Level 3-style assisted driving capabilities. Tesla’s FSD in China was made available for a one-time payment of 64,000 yuan (approximately $9,420), distinguishing it from its global subscription-only model initiated earlier this year.

China represents a significant portion of Tesla’s global operations, and the introduction of FSD comes as competition intensifies, with local manufacturers such as XPeng, BYD, and Geely rapidly advancing their own autonomous driving technologies. XPeng has recently rolled out its VLA 2.0 system, while BYD and Geely are collaborating with NVIDIA to develop Level 4 capabilities; strategies that may challenge Tesla’s market position.

Tesla’s FSD launch in China marks a strategic effort to bolster its ecosystem and capitalize on reoccurring software revenue, amid rising pressure from domestic competition.
