Tesla’s May Sales Surge in China
Tesla reported a 22.5% year-over-year increase in retail sales in China for May, selling 47,281 electric vehicles, according to the China Passenger Car Association. This marks the first year-over-year growth since February and an 82% increase from April’s sales of fewer than 26,000 units.
The Model Y led the sales rebound with 54,765 units shipped, a 39% increase compared to last year, while Model 3 sales rose 41% to 31,217 units. Despite this monthly improvement, year-to-date retail sales in China remain down nearly 8% compared to the same period last year, totaling about 186,000 units.
The surge was driven primarily by aggressive financing incentives and a refreshed lineup, including a revamped Model Y. However, the broader market for new energy vehicles declined by about 7.5% year-over-year in May, indicating Tesla’s rise occurred against a backdrop of stiff competition and economic pressures.
