Tesla Inc Resolves Rear Camera Issues for Chinese Vehicles
Electric vehicle behemoth Tesla Inc (TSLA) has announced a much-needed remedy to its fleet of vehicles in China, involving a software update for over 8,000 cars. The update is in response to concerns regarding rear camera issues, which have been identified as a safety hazard.
What’s the Buzz about the Software Update?
Following an announcement by the China State Administration for Market Regulation, Tesla is set to deploy a software update to address potential abnormalities in approximately 1,071 imported Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as 7,629 domestically produced Model 3 sedans. These vehicles have been found to exhibit an unstable rear camera integrated circuit communication, resulting in difficulties displaying reversing images, a fundamental function for safe driving.
Over-The-Air Update: A Convenient Solution
Tesla plans to deliver the crucial update directly to the affected vehicles through an over-the-air (OTA) update process, eliminating the need for drivers to physically visit a service center. However, for vehicles unable to receive the OTA update, Tesla has proposed to reach out to them through designated service centers and facilitate the installation of the required software upgrade. The expediency of this approach is paramount, as it seeks to ensure the safety of the Tesla fleet in China.
Why It’s Significant
Notably, this isn’t Tesla’s first encounter with the rear camera issue. In a recent development, Tesla issued a recall of nearly 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. for identical concerns and resolved the matter via an OTA software update. The recall in the U.S. covered various models, including the Model S, X, and Y vehicles. This consistent approach underscores Tesla’s commitment to swiftly addressing concerns related to vehicle safety, ensuring a proactive response to potential hazards.
Drivers have been advised by the state regulator to promptly update their vehicle’s software to mitigate any risk associated with the rear camera issue.
