Tesla has launched autonomous robotaxi rides in Austin, TX, marking a significant milestone as these vehicles operate without human safety monitors. This development follows initial tests that began in December 2025, where Tesla gradually phased out human oversight to evaluate real-world performance and enhance their self-driving technology.

The current rollout includes a limited number of vehicles, with most of the robotaxi fleet still under human supervision to ensure safety. Tesla plans to refine its operations in Austin before considering broader expansion. Additionally, production of the Cybercab, a vehicle designed specifically for autonomous use without a steering wheel or pedals, is set to begin at Giga Texas within the next 100 days as part of Tesla’s long-term vision for self-driving transportation.
