Tesla unveiled its two-seat Cybercab robotaxi on September 3, 2026, in Austin. This autonomous vehicle operates without a steering wheel or pedals and utilizes Tesla’s onboard AI technology. The launch is part of Tesla’s broader ambitions in artificial intelligence, which also include the development of its humanoid robot, Optimus, and the Grok AI system that manages vehicle functions via voice commands.
In its latest financial report for Q2 2026, Tesla posted record revenue of $28.24 billion, a 26% increase year-over-year. However, operating income fell 57% to $398 million, with operating expenses rising significantly due to investments in AI and robotaxi projects. The company is experiencing challenges with shrinking automotive margins and a 67% decline in regulatory credit revenue, which has traditionally supported profits.
Tesla holds a stake in SpaceX, valued at approximately $1 billion in unrealized gains, contributing to its financial metrics. With ambitions for the Cybercab and Optimus, the company faces significant execution risks, as external sales for Optimus are anticipated as early as the second half of 2027 but are not yet confirmed.
