NHTSA Investigates Tesla’s Full Self-Driving System

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has intensified its investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, assessing its safety in low visibility conditions. This follows a series of accidents, including one that resulted in a fatality. The probe covers 3.2 million Tesla vehicles manufactured since 2016.

Investigators noted that the degradation detection system, designed to alert drivers when visibility is impaired, failed to do so in nine analyzed incidents, some occurring just before collisions. NHTSA has opened an “Engineering Analysis” to determine if the system is functioning properly and to evaluate software updates made since the fatal incident.

If defects are found that cannot be addressed through software updates, Tesla may face recalls or mandatory hardware changes, which could significantly impact both the company’s finances and reputation.
