Elon Musk aims to manufacture humanoid robots by the millions, significantly impacting industrial operations. The ambition is not just about the robots themselves but the extensive supply chain required for production. Analysts predict Musk’s Tesla Inc. could eventually produce the Optimus humanoid at a target price of $20,000 to $30,000 per unit, needing numerous components like cameras, sensors, and motors from various suppliers.
Recent testing by BMW at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant revealed a humanoid robot moved over 90,000 components and logged approximately 1,250 hours of work, supporting the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles. Despite current limitations in efficiency and cost, JPMorgan estimates that humanoid robots could operate at $10 to $12 per hour, making them potentially more economical than human workers by 2030. This shift could open up a market projected to touch a $50 trillion industry as robots become more integrated into factory settings.
