The U.S. is gearing up for a new space race, with NASA and China targeting the lunar south pole for future research station development. NASA’s Artemis program aims for its first crewed landing by 2028, while China is pursuing a crewed lunar landing before 2030 and a base by 2035. Both plans seek to access vital resources like water ice, which is essential for life support and rocket propellant.
As part of this initiative, NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program has outlined 17 planned lunar missions, with companies like Intuitive Machines Inc., Firefly Aerospace Inc., and L3Harris Technologies Inc. positioned to play critical roles. Intuitive Machines has secured a $180.4 million contract for delivery missions, Firefly Aerospace has six contracted lunar missions, and L3Harris has developed RS-25 engines for NASA’s Artemis III mission. The supply chain and operational support for lunar bases will be a significant aspect of sustained lunar presence.
