Thursday’s Underperforming Sectors: Utilities, Technology, and Communications

As of midday Thursday, the Utilities sector is underperforming with a 0.7% loss, driven largely by PG&E Corp (PCG) and Edison International (EIX), which are down 3.9% and 3.6% respectively. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) is down 0.6% for the day, despite being up 14.65% year-to-date. Year-to-date losses for PG&E and Edison are 26.51% and 29.32%, respectively, with both companies representing roughly 4.1% of XLU’s holdings.

The Technology & Communications sector is also lagging, showing a 0.6% drop, impacted by First Solar Inc (FSLR) and Enphase Energy Inc. (ENPH), down 6.7% and 4.1% respectively. The Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) is down 0.4% on the day but up 11.65% year-to-date. Year-to-date performance for First Solar is up 9.28%, while Enphase is down 50.20%, combining for about 0.3% of XLK’s holdings.
