The Dawn of a New Apple Era: Gene Munster Predicts Revolutionary Changes in Operating System Design at WWDC

Deepwater Asset Management’s Gene Munster sees Apple Inc. entering a new epoch with their upcoming developer conference, the WWDC, predicting that it will be incredibly significant.

Key Points: Munster’s optimism stems from Apple’s marketing chief, Greg “Joz” Joswiak, hinting at AI as the focal point of WWDC 2024.

According to Munster, this event is poised to instigate “the most monumental update in Apple’s OS layout since pioneering the mid-80s on-screen point-and-click interface.”

In 1983, Apple revolutionized computing with the introduction of Lisa, the world’s first commercial computer boasting a graphical user interface (GUI). This set the stage for computers to transition from mouse-centric inputs to touch screens.

Munster foresees the next frontier in user interfaces as generative AI, anticipating Apple’s announcement in this domain during WWDC.

Among Munster’s projections is the integration of generative AI into essential Apple applications like iMessage, Mail, Calendar, and Notes. Additionally, he anticipates the introduction of an AI-powered iteration of Siri, potentially marking the most significant enhancement to Apple’s virtual assistant in recent memory.

One theoretical example of Apple integrating generative AI within iOS could involve summoning an Uber solely through a verbal command, such as “Book me an Uber to the airport.”

However, Munster cautions against unwavering optimism, noting that competitors like Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google have made strides in this realm, with Copilot and Gemini, respectively.

While this would mark a considerable advancement for Apple, Munster asserts that it might not match the sheer magnitude of progress achieved elsewhere.

Significance: Apple has trailed competitors in integrating generative AI into its ecosystem.

Under the stewardship of Tim Cook, Apple recently procured the Canadian AI startup, DarwinAI, with rumors suggesting a potential collaboration with Google’s Gemini AI to implement generative AI features in iOS 18.

iOS 18 is rumored to be the most substantial software enhancement in iPhone history, with speculations pointing toward AI enhancements and redesigning the home screen. Additional revisions may be in the pipeline, with further clarification expected during WWDC.

Stock Movement: Apple’s stock experienced a 0.34% decline in premarket trading after concluding at $173.31 on the preceding day, as per Benzinga Pro.
