AI Hyperscalers Increase Data Center Spending
In 2023, leading artificial intelligence hyperscalers Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta Platforms are collectively spending hundreds of billions on data center capital expenditures to meet growing AI demand. Amazon is projected to spend approximately $200 billion this year, mainly through its Amazon Web Services (AWS), which contributes 59% of its operating profits. Microsoft, leveraging its Azure cloud service, reports an annual AI business run rate of $37 billion, with a 123% growth rate.
Alphabet’s Google Cloud is growing rapidly, with a 63% increase in the first quarter, while Meta, primarily focused on advertising, has yet to establish a strong AI revenue stream. As the AI sector evolves, these four companies represent significant investment opportunities, although Meta’s spending appears riskier due to its uncertain returns.
