Key Points
The South Korean stock market has surged significantly in 2026, with the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (Kospi) up nearly 60%. The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF has seen even more remarkable performance, increasing almost 88% this year. This sharp rise is largely attributed to major semiconductor companies like Samsung and SK Hynix, which make up over half of the Kospi index.
Goldman Sachs has set a 12-month target for the Kospi index at 9,000, reflecting a potential 34% increase, driven by expected 300% earnings growth due to a global shortage in memory chips. Currently, the Kospi trades at about 12 times earnings, significantly lower than the S&P 500’s P/E ratio of around 26.
As of now, the Kospi index stands at 6,715, and analysts predict that this upward trend could continue into 2027, highlighting South Korea’s growing attractiveness to foreign investors and potential for significant returns.
