Tuesday Market Underperformers: Materials and Energy Sectors

As of midday Tuesday, the Materials sector is the worst performer, down 1.5%. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) leads losses at 6.0%, followed by Builders FirstSource Inc. (BLDR) at 4.1%. The Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB) is down 1.2% for the day but up 5.48% year-to-date. Notably, FCX has increased 15.55% year-to-date, while BLDR has decreased 12.60%.

The Energy sector follows closely with a 1.0% loss. Halliburton Company (HAL) and Diamondback Energy, Inc. (FANG) report losses of 2.4% and 1.8%, respectively. The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) is down 1.2% but up 7.86% year-to-date. Year-to-date, HAL has declined 5.75%, whereas FANG has increased by 24.02%.

Overall, only two sectors are up while seven are down, with Utilities seeing a modest gain of 0.2% and Consumer Products up by 0.1%.
