Tuesday Sector Highlights: Energy and Utilities Leaders

As of Tuesday afternoon, energy stocks listed on the S&P 500 are leading the market with a decline of only 0.8%. EQT Corp (EQT) and Diamondback Energy, Inc. (FANG) stand out with gains of 2.4% and 1.6%, respectively. The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) is down 1.3% for the day but has increased by 1.48% year-to-date. EQT is up 5.76% year-to-date, while Diamondback is down 12.20%. Together, these companies make up roughly 4.0% of XLE’s holdings.

The utilities sector ranks second, declining 0.9%. NRG Energy Inc (NRG) and Vistra Corp (VST) reported gains of 3.6% and 1.9%, respectively. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) is down 1.3% on the day, with a year-to-date increase of 1.85%. NRG is down 2.14% year-to-date, while Vistra has seen a drop of 19.77%. NRG and VST collectively account for about 4.6% of XLU’s underlying holdings.
