Clarity Act Proposed to Regulate Digital Assets
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, known as the Clarity Act, is a proposed federal bill aimed at establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets and cryptocurrencies in the United States. Introduced by Senators Cynthia Lummis and Kirsten Gillibrand in June 2022, the bill provides definitions for digital securities and commodities and mandates registration and consumer protection measures for exchanges like Coinbase (COIN). A Senate vote is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, with Republicans holding 53 seats, requiring at least seven Democratic votes to overcome a filibuster.
Recent updates to the bill include a 635-page text outlining significant concessions. As of now, the odds of the Clarity Act becoming law by July 1, 2027 have risen from approximately 30% to 53%, according to Kalshi. Reporting indicates that 7-10 Democrats are supportive of passing the bill, signaling potential bipartisan agreement.
