PC Market Faces Significant Challenges Amid Rising Memory Chip Prices
Soaring memory chip prices are predicted to adversely affect PC demand in 2026, leading to a projected 10.4% decline in PC shipments, according to Gartner. The firm anticipates a 17% surge in PC prices this year, compelling consumers and businesses to retain current devices for longer.
HP (NYSE: HPQ) is facing particularly severe challenges, with memory and storage costs projected to rise from 15-18% of its PC bill of materials to 35%. Despite an 11% year-over-year increase in Personal Systems revenue in Q1 2026, HP’s operating margins are expected to fall below long-term targets due to escalated input costs, hindering profitability.
Conversely, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is leveraging the situation by introducing a budget MacBook, the MacBook Neo, priced competitively at $599. This strategic move aims to attract Windows users amid soaring PC prices, positioning Apple to potentially expand its market share as PC OEMs struggle with the memory price crisis.
