Amazon Stock Performance and Profit Drivers
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares have surged 44% in 2026, significantly outperforming the market, with a recent all-time high reached this week. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a critical growth engine, contributing over half of the company’s operating profit, with its segment sales climbing 28% to $37.6 million in Q1.
In the first quarter, Amazon’s net sales rose 17%, the strongest increase in nearly five years. The company’s total operating profit for the quarter stood at $23.9 billion, driven largely by AWS’s operating profit of $14.2 billion. As a result, Amazon’s net margins have reached an all-time high of 12.2%.
Amazon has announced significant capital expenditures of $200 billion this year, doubling its investment from two years ago, to further enhance its operations and support its growing cloud business.
