Warren Buffett Retires as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway
Billionaire Warren Buffett retired as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway on December 31, marking the end of over 50 years at the helm. Buffett, who remains a director on the board, actively managed the company’s $312 billion investment portfolio up until his retirement.
In his final quarter, Buffett sold approximately 515 million shares of Bank of America, reducing Berkshire’s stake by 50%, while simultaneously investing about $1.2 billion in Chevron. Chevron’s shares have surged by 36% since the beginning of 2026 due to energy supply disruptions following military actions involving Iran that impacted significant oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.
As of early 2024, Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in Bank of America was valued at over $41 billion, but Buffett’s selling spree was driven by valuation concerns and the company’s interest rate sensitivity. His strategic moves reflect ongoing changes in the financial landscape and market conditions.
