Berkshire Hathaway’s Investment in Visa
As of the end of its 2025 fiscal year on September 30, Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, holds significant investments across more than 40 publicly traded companies, with over $302 billion in its public equity portfolio. Visa, the largest market capitalization and transaction volume player among the three major credit card companies, is among Berkshire’s major holdings. In its latest fiscal year, Visa reported net cash from operations of $23.06 billion and generated free cash flow of $21.58 billion, distributing $18.19 billion through stock buybacks and $4.63 billion in dividends.
Visa’s business model allows it to maintain low capital expenditures of $1.48 billion, which enhances its ability to return cash to shareholders. The company’s strategy of using free cash flow primarily for stock buybacks significantly reduces its share count and boosts earnings per share, contributing to a current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 32.3, below its 10-year median of 34.3.
