International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has partnered with Indian AI company Sarvam to develop sovereign AI technologies for government agencies in India. This collaboration will pilot AI applications for citizen services and administrative workflows, aiming to enhance data control and support multilingual interactions across various Indian languages.

The partnership combines IBM’s enterprise AI infrastructure with Sarvam’s AI models, focusing on improving operational and regulatory compliance within India’s public sector. Key initiatives will include solutions for grievance redressal and document processing, which are expected to facilitate engagement with citizens effectively.

As part of IBM’s broader strategy in AI, the watsonx platform will serve as the core technology, emphasizing generative AI and data management. However, IBM faces challenges, including competition from cloud services like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, alongside potential threats from AI firms such as Anthropic. IBM has seen a 9.7% decline in stock value over the past year as it navigates these challenges.
