YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG, GOOGL), reported record ad revenue of $11.1 billion in Q2 2023, marking a 13% increase year-over-year. This performance eclipses a significant milestone for the platform, as it surpassed $10 billion for the first time. In comparison, Netflix reported total revenue of $12.6 billion during the same quarter with a growth rate of 13.4%.
Despite YouTube’s strong growth, it represents less than 10% of Alphabet’s overall revenue, which is primarily driven by Google Search. Analysts estimate YouTube’s operating margins to be in the teens, significantly lower than Netflix’s operating margin of 33.4%. Both platforms are expected to continue growing, with YouTube aiming to narrow the gap with Netflix amidst evolving competition in the video entertainment landscape.
