Fortescue and Tłı̨chǫ Government Formalize Collaboration with MOU at AME Roundup

Tłı̨chǫ Government Partners with Fortescue to Explore Mineral Prospects

New Memorandum of Understanding Aims to Unlock Mineral Potential in Tłı̨chǫ Lands

The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Tłı̨chǫ Government and Fortescue aims to enhance the understanding of mineral resources on Tłı̨chǫ Lands. This agreement reflects the Tłı̨chǫ Government’s willingness to collaborate with industry partners, helping to build the necessary capabilities for conducting independent geological surveys.

Initial efforts will focus on evaluating the potential for mineral systems, particularly lithium, caesium, and tantalum pegmatites, across designated portions of Tłı̨chǫ Lands.

Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “Today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Tłı̨chǫ Government and Fortescue marks a milestone in the development of potential mining opportunities in Tłı̨chǫ lands.”

He added, “We look forward to working with Fortescue to explore future opportunities and, through informed research and planning, build a brighter future for our communities.”

Moreover, Chief Lafferty emphasized the importance of forming partnerships with responsible global companies to preserve Tłı̨chǫ culture and traditions. He highlighted that such collaborations would help safeguard the land and its wildlife.

Warren Fish, Fortescue’s director of approvals, communities, and environment, noted, “Fortescue was founded as an exploration company, and we still believe that early-stage exploration is the key to unlocking significant value.”

Fish characterized the signing of this agreement as a pivotal moment in their joint venture with the Tłı̨chǫ Government, calling it a testament to the innovative and cooperative spirit of the Tłı̨chǫ people. He expressed hope that together they could establish a new benchmark for resource development—centered on people, culture, and environmental stewardship.
