Microsoft Launches Maia 200 AI Chip

Microsoft has released its long-awaited Maia 200 AI chip on January 26, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the AI chip market. This second-generation in-house chip is designed for artificial intelligence inference and is built on Taiwan Semiconductor’s 3-nanometer process. The Maia 200 boasts a 30% performance advantage over competitors, including Nvidia, Amazon’s Trainium, and Alphabet’s Google TPU.

The company reports a 40% increase in Azure and cloud services revenue in its first quarter of fiscal year 2026, surpassing $3.5 trillion in market capitalization. Microsoft’s stock has dipped over 2% at the start of the year, with a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio currently under 30. As Azure cloud customers will be able to access the Maia 200 for rent—unlike its predecessor—Microsoft is poised to generate new revenue streams and potentially enhance its competitive standing in the AI sector.
