Tesla has surpassed 8.4 billion cumulative miles driven with its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, a critical milestone reported on the company’s safety page. This extensive data collection is essential for refining its autonomous driving technology, with CEO Elon Musk suggesting that approximately 10 billion miles may be needed for safe unsupervised driving.
The growth in FSD mileage has seen a dramatic increase, jumping from about 6 million miles in 2021 to projected 4.25 billion miles in 2025, with nearly 1 billion miles already logged in just the first 50 days of 2024. Concurrently, Tesla has initiated supervised FSD testing in Abu Dhabi as part of its global expansion efforts.
In competitive context, Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo has accumulated nearly 200 million fully autonomous miles, while General Motors has mapped out 600,000 miles for hands-free driving, indicating significant advancements across the industry.
